Bird Island Proposed Marine Nature Reserve

The dataset (a polygon feature) describes the Bird Island proposed Marine Nature Reserve. The boundary has been drawn in the context of the Assessment of Fishing Closure Areas as Sites for wider marine management in the Falkland Islands. A public counsultation took place in April/May 2017 and the boundaries are still at the "proposal" stage and are not considered final.

Lineage The dataset was generated in QGIS initially from a 3nm buffer around the coastline of Bird Island. Then this buffer was used to derive a simplified boundary, as per the "Guidance on defining boundaries for MMAs in the Falkland Islands" , included as an Annex in Golding. N. & Aug?. A.A., 2017. The Assessment of Fishing Closure Areas as Sites for wider marine management in the Falkland Islands (known as the AFCAS report). Evidence supporting this boundary is from a variety of sources, and includes information on globally significant populations of seabirds. Further data sources are listed in the AFCAS report.
