Blue Carbon calculations and valuations for the Falkland Islands

The dataset is an excel file with estimate on blue carbon in the inshore waters around the Falkalnd Islands waters. Evaluation of blue carbon comprises of: total standing stock of carbon held by the giant kelp (Macrocystis), estimation of carbon sequestration to deep sea sediments from Macrocystis kelp and general estimation of carbon value determined by previous two parameters. The valuation is based on data available in 2016 and stored in the Marine Recorder database (FK-SMSG-162).

Lineage The excel file comprises of three worksheets. The first tab describes calculations involved in estimating the total standing stock of carbon held within Macrocystis kelp in the waters of the Falkland Islands (as of 2016/2017). The second tab describes calculations involved in estimating the aspects of carbon sequestration to deep sea sediments from Macrocystis kelp in the waters of the Falkland Islands (as of 2016/2017). The third tab describes calculations involved in estimating carbon value in general, the resulting vlaue of the standing stock, and the min, avg, and max value of the sequestration to deep sea annually. An explanation on the analyses carried out on the data is provided in the word document README_Kelp_Blue_Carbon_2017_calculations. Groundtruth data were obtained from SMSG marine recorder database (period from 2008 to 2016). The total distribution of kelp around the Falkalnds was estimated for 2016 using digitised GoogleEarth imagery (FK-SAERI-284). The data have been published in the report: Giant kelp ‘Blue carbon’ storage and sequestration value in the Falkland Islands. (Bayley et al. 2017) available with the data.
