DPLUS083 Peat Depth and Peatland Extent

This data set contains two layers: one for peat depth and one for peatland extent ( peat / no peat). They were generated as part of the Darwin Plus 083 project ‘Soil map and online database as climate change mitigation tools’, which was funded by the Darwin Initiative through UK Government and ran from April 2018 to October 2020. Additional layers for physical and chemical soil properties, soil classes, erosion extent and erosion risk are also available on the data portal.

Lineage Peat definition was based on soil horizons with an organic matter content > 20%; this refers to peat, loamy peat, sandy peat, peaty loam and peaty sand. All peaty horizons from the soil surface to the first mineral horizon were included and added to calculate peat depth. Additionally to the general soil survey points, a further 257 points were included for peat depth to increase the sample size. The layers were generated through Digital Soil Mapping with spatial covariates and field observations, which were linked using a trained neural network model. The peat depth layer was used to create the peat / no peat layer; a cut-off of 40 cm of peat depth was applied to define 'peat' and 'no peat'.
