Extended continental shelf of Namibia

The dataset comprises Exclusive Economic Zone of Namibia defined by the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (area out to 200 nautical miles (nmi) from the coast) and claimed by Namibia extension of aforementioned EEZ outside of the 200 nmi limit called the extended continental shelf of Namibia.

Lineage The dataset has been created using points provided in the Namibia Extended continental shelf summary (Table I, link available in the additional information field). These points have been created as a result of both, the elaboration of a detailed Desktop Study in order to find out the pertinence of Namibia’s claim, and a dedicated oceanographic survey with state-of-the-art technology for the systematic data gathering and processing, which was further analyzed and interpreted onshore. This information together with the previous data enabled the establishment of the UNCLOS legal parameters for the delineation of the outer limit of the extended continental shelf of the Republic of Namibia which comprises the seabed and subsoil of the submarine areas that extend beyond its territorial sea throughout the natural prolongation of its andmass to the outer edge of the continental marginas provided in Article 76 of UNCLOS.
