Falkland Islands Natural Nature Reserves

Boundaries of National Nature Reserves (NNRs) in the Falkland Islands. In the Falkland Islands, National Nature Reserves (NNRs) are currently the only way of legally designating a protected area. Lineage The boundaries were digitised by Sian Nightingale/ Clare Cockwell from three sources: 1) from the maps accompanying the original designation orders; 2) from the farm boundary shape file digitised by DoA ; and 3) from GPS data. Because the NNR were digitised using multiple sources, the temporal extent of the data varies from area to area. The accuracy varies as well, above all for the NNRs that have been digitised from old maps because the fence lines used as boundaries are likely to not exist anymore or have been moved. Similarly, the boundaries drawn from the farm boundary shape files may have changed and are not anymore visible nowadays. Thus, the overall accuracy of the dataset is difficult to be assessed. Pdf of the old original designation orders are available on request. Currently there is not a list that identifies the data sources used to draw each NNRs (the only one known is thta Chartres Horse paddock has ben digitised using GPS). Information included in the attribute table is: ownership, ID code which comes from adding the id of the locality and the id of the name of the locality, IUNC status.
