Monitoring of birds species of Sea Lion Island, Falkland Islands (2013-2019)

The dataseries covers data collected from regular surveys of bird species breeding on Sea Lion Island from 2013 to the present. Data collection has three main goals : 1) create a flexible data recording system that may permit to collect data on different species with different level of detail; 2) produce an inventory of the bird species present on the island; 3) accumulate data on presence, distribution and breeding success that may permit the analysis of medium and long term trends. A flexible custom database and form system have been used to permit collection of data about the different species. The focus of the data collection is on species that are understudied in order to avoid to duplicate effort on species that are already well monitored (e.g., penguins). A specific effort is put in collecting data on ducks and geese that occupy the coastal areas, and on gulls , which can be very sensitive to human disturbance. Further information is available on the research group website, www.eleseal.org.

Lineage The data collected from 2013 to 2019 are used to determine bird species presence, distribution and breeding success. The data can be divided into three types: 1) data from weekly surveys in which the whole island coastal area was surveyed; 2) data from dediucated surveys of specific species (e.g., coastal transects to census geese and ducks); 3) ad libitum records of bird presence, in which the information was collected opportunistically. A data entry system that permits a very flexible collection of data in the field, with variable quantity of information for the different species, is used for collecting data. This data entry system runs on Window Mobile palmtop computer, and has forms with pop down and pull up menus, checkboxes, lists, and linked databases, that greatly simplify the inputting of data, reducing at the same time the error rate.
