Monitoring of ringed two-banded plovers at Sea Lion Island

The dataset includes georeferenced records of resights of two-banded plover (Charadrius falklandicus) that were marked at Sea Lion Island (Falkland Islands), using plastic and metal rings Those birds were ringed during a previous research project lead by Dr. Tamas Szekely of the University of Bath. The project was stopped in 2007, and the banded birds were not resighted anymore. In 2008, after getting confirmartion by the Sea Lion Lodge manager of the time (Miss Jenny Luxton) that the original plover project was definitely abandoned, we started collecting resighting data of all ringed plovers that we were able to observe during the field work that we routinely carry out at Sea Lion Island for other research projects (see www.eleseal.org). Although the birds were marked by other researchers, and althoiugh the original ringing data is not available to us, we think that the collection of resights of the ringed birds can be useful for the monitoring of the population and to estimate vital statistics using CMR models.

Lineage Two-banded plovers we opportunistically resighted every year during the routine field work carried out at Sea Lion Island by 2 PIs and 2-6 field helpers. The time coverage of the resighting was variable among years, but plovers were always observed during the breeding season. Starting from 2013, the time coverage was end of August to late March or early April every year. After locating a ringed plover, we collected data on the ring configuration, area and GPS position, size and plumage of the subject, general habitat and substrate, association with other ringed individuals. The opportunistic data was augmented by systematic searches og nesting two-banded plovers carried out during the breeding season.
