| Lineage | To estimate density, population size and distribution of Patagonian foxes, we used a model-based distance sampling survey with line transects across Weddell Island. We divided the island into two stratum, the littoral stratum where distance between transects was 1,000m, and the central stratum, where transect spacing was 2,000m. A total of 94 coastal and 8 central transects were created. The survey was carried out by 4 observers from the 1st of January to the 15th of January. We walked 172 km of transects. At the beginning of each transect, the date, time, estimated wind speed, wind direction, precipitation, and visibility were recorded. When a fox was detected, distance (in meters, accuracy 5m) and angle (in azimuth degrees) relative to the fox was recorded. 46 foxes were detected. |
