Premier Oil Exploration and Production Ltd (2019) FI Marine Invasives Monitoring Report

The dataset is a report which describes the results from a marine invasive speces monitoring programme run between 2016 and 2018 at three locations in proximity of Stanley (Falkland Islands). The programme was the first to be conducted in the Falklands and aimed at providing proof-of-concept for methods of detecting the arrival of marine invasive species, in support of potential increased shipping activity at the Temporary Doc Facility (TDF) and other locations. Premier Oil contracted the Shallow Marine Surveys Group Ltd, in partnership with FIG – Biosecurity, SAERI and the University of Aberdeen.

Lineage The marine invasive species monitoring programme consisted in deploying settlement plates at the Temporary Doc Facility (TDF) and other locations wihtin Stanley Harbour and Port William. At each site, an array of three 150mm x 150mm PVC panels (plates) were deployed on which marine organisms would settle. The monitoring of the plates occurred approximately monthly. In each occasion, plates were photographed for visual detection of species and if fully encrusted with organisms, plates would be removed, preserved in 98% Ethanol, and new clean plates were deployed. Periodically plates would be sent to Aberdeen to be analysed for their total genetic composition of the species assemblage. A temperature logger was used to record annual temperature changes at the TDF and York Bay, recording every 30mins.
