Lineage In each season, all nests within a specific study area are marked in late October/ early November and adults nesting within this demographic study site are checked for rings. Un-ringed adult birds receive a BTO stainless steel ring on the right leg. Nest ID and ring numbers are recorded on each occasion. In late March, chicks from marked nests are ringed on the left leg with a BTO stainless steel ring. To reduce human error when transcribing ring numbers, rings are read backwards and forwards by a ring reader to a scriber who repeates the number back to the reader. Further, rings are deployed in order to facilitate recording and reduce error. Ring data are submitted to BTO.
