Utilisation of areas at sea and predicted distribution maps of black-browed albatrosses on the Southern Patagonian shelf

The dataset comprises of polygon shape files derived from telemetry data (FK-SAERI-586) and represent important at-sea areas of black-browed albatrosses on the Southern Patagonian shelf. Telemetry data were obtained from colonial breeding marine birds in the Falkland Islands

Lineage The dataset is a group of shape files which are the results of an habitat selection modeling study. Starting from telemetry data, in order to summarize the observed distribution of individuals at-sea, the location data were split into groups according to the species, sex (if available), breeding status and when appriate, breeding stage. Details of this splitting process are provided in the additional excel file entitled “Details of all shp files produced”. Then, the R package adehabitatHR was used to estimate the utilisation distribution (UD) of each group. The shape files indicates in their file name whether the UD was use 50 or 90 percent of the time (these were obtained by retaining the 50% isopleth for each colony). The resulting areas were considered core areas of use of the sea by each group. Indeed, GAMs were applied in order to assess the habitat used by the groups and to predict the space used by animals from unobserved colonies.
