Biological and tagging data of 2 common lobster species caught around St Helena Island collected from November 2018.

The dataset is an excel file which comprises of data on the biology: length, weight, sex, etc; habitat; histology and funcundity for brown spiny lobster (Panulirus echinatus) and the endemic red slipper lobster (Scyllarides obtusus). The lobsters were caught from different locations on both the leeward and windward sides of Saint Helena Island from November 2018, in order to determine abundance and distribution of both species and to characterise seasonal reproductive cycles in the lobster ecology.

Lineage 2269 lobsters were caught by potting or diving, then tagged, biometrics recorded and released alive. Eggs were removed from 133 females (released alive) and fecundity estimates were calculated from volume (subsample of 15 eggs measured) and dry weight (2 x subsamples of 100 eggs weighted) measurements. 48 lobsters were dissected for histology sampling. 5 accoustic receivers were deployed and 21 panulirus specimen were fitted with accoustic tags to monitor movement. 104 abundance and habitat survey dives (transects) were conducted and GPS tracks recorded.
