St Helena Open-ocean Time-series Study (S.H.O.T.S)

This dataseries consists of an excel files and a collection of CSV files which contains data on abundance of zooplankton at the sampling station, vertical profile of the water column and water clarity taken from 1 common location around St.Helena.The zooplankton samples were taken using simple zooplankton nets (aperture 60cm with a 1Lsolid cod end extension) hauled vertically from 200m to the surface. Two samples were taken using two different net mesh sizes (100µm and 250µm). Furthermore data was collected on 7 properties in the water column: temperature, salinity, conductivity, pressure, depth, sound velocity and density of the upper ocean (<500m). Each individual cast is contained in a seperate csv file. The clarity of water is measured using a 30cm white secchi disk.

Lineage Zooplankton was collected at sea: physical samples were fixed in 4% formalin solution for ten days. After this time samples were split using a folsom splitter into a reasonable sample to count (approx 200 individuals). Samples were enumerated into 20 basic groups and counts are available under 'raw' tab in the data series file. Abundance per cubic metre was then calculated by multiplying the split fraction up to the total for the sample and dividing by the volume of water sampled. Physical samples were transferred to Steadmans solution for long term storage and are available per request for further analysis. Furthermore data has been gathered using a Valeport mini CTD (with a passive flow induction cell, Platinum Resistance Thermometer and a strain gauge transducer) and extracted using Valeport DataLogX2 software (version1.0.4.1270). Vertical deployment from a 12m vessel and winch hauled. Lastly a 30cm white Secchi Disk disk is attached to a weighted rope so that it sinks vertically. The Depth is measured when dish disapears and reappears to give the secchi depth.
